Australians warned of scammers targeting funeral live streams

Funeral directors around the country are grappling with online scammers homing in on funeral service live streams and attempting to swindle vulnerable mourners.

Dale Gilson, CEO of the Australian Funeral Directors Association, said several funeral homes across the country have been targeted. 

"Families are already going through one of the toughest times of their lives without also being subjected to attempts to defraud them by faceless people on the internet who have no care or empathy for what they are going through," he said.

A spokesperson for the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission said the National Anti-Scam Centre is aware of reports of live streaming related scams circulating on social media.

"We have had some reports of this extending to live streaming funerals," they said. 

Their advice is for people to contact the funeral home directly for live streaming details.
